IF you haven't yet experienced the joy and colour of The Australian Body Art Carnivale on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, then you're missing out. Not only is it a great location, the Australian Body Art Carnivale is a well established event on the Australian arts calender boasting some pretty awesome talent.

Coinciding with the famous Eumundi Markets and held on the first weekend in May, the Australian Body Art Carnivale draws a big crowd of spectators, face painters and body artists from far and wide.

Event manager Danielle Taylor said attendance this year had probably set a record.

"It's been a fantastic event with a massive turn-out and it's all gone really well," Danielle said.

Around 100 competitors converged on the village to take part, each with a different take on this year's theme of 'Dreams and Nightmares'.

“Some artists focused on dreams, other on nightmares, and many intertwined the two – showing the duality between good and evil, beauty and horror," she said.

"We saw works that featured spiders, grotesque gore, sci-fi horror and monsters as well as angels, rainbow sprites, goddesses and knights in shining armor.”

With an inclusive family atmosphere and impressive prizes, the competition attracts fresh new talent as well as the more seasoned competitors.

From a spectator's point of view, it was great to see how the organisers included the public, and in doing so, delivered the art form to a wider audience.

Held over two days and free to the public, the Carnivale has been showcasing Australian talent since 2008 and continues to build on its strengths. Watching the artists develop their ideas was one of the highlights for me.

Brady Neher and Julie Tattam of Skincognito were guest judges.
